Product Description
Fullerene C60 is a hollow cage‑shaped spherical molecule composed of 60 carbon atoms.
Geometry: Truncated icosahedron, containing 12 regular pentagons and 20 regular hexagons (32 faces, 60 vertices, 90 edges in total).
Bonding: Each carbon atom is sp²‑hybridized with delocalized π‑bonds; highly symmetric structure (Ih point group).
Product properties & Features
High stability: Stable at room temperature and atmospheric pressure; difficult to decompose below 400°C, with excellent resistance to oxidation, radiation and chemical corrosion.
Powerful free radical scavenging capacity: The efficiency of eliminating reactive oxygen species (ROS) is approximately 170 times that of vitamin C, known as a "free radical sponge".
Excellent modifiability: The cage structure can undergo addition, substitution and doping reactions to form derivatives (e.g., hydroxyfullerene, metallofullerene), suitable for multi-scenario applications.
Weak oxidizing/reducing property: It can accept electrons to form anions and can also be oxidized by strong oxidants, exhibiting both electron donor and acceptor characteristics.
Intrinsic semiconductor: Band gap of approximately 1.8 eV, low conductivity at room temperature; alkali metal doping (e.g., K₃C₆₀) can form superconductors with a superconducting transition temperature Tc≈18 K.
Superior electron transport property: High electron mobility, commonly used as an electron acceptor/transport layer in organic photovoltaics (OPV) and organic field-effect transistors (OFET).
Applications
Energy Materials
Organic Photovoltaics (OPV): Electron acceptor material for higher conversion efficiency.
Energy storage: Hydrogen storage media, lithium‑ion battery electrode additive.
Pharmaceuticals & Cosmetics
Antioxidant / anti‑aging: Key ingredient in skincare for free‑radical scavenging, anti‑inflammation and brightening.
Drug delivery: Cage structure encapsulates anti‑cancer drugs for targeted delivery.
Materials Science
Reinforcing filler: Improves polymer strength, heat resistance and radiation resistance.
Superconductivity / magnetism: Precursors for low‑temperature superconductors and magnetic materials.
Industrial Catalysis
Used in polymer synthesis, environmental catalysis (e.g., VOC degradation).
