Epoxidized Polybutadiene
EPB
CAS No. 71342-74-0
Chemical Name: Epoxidized Polybutadiene
Aliases: Polybutadiene epoxy resin
Code: EPB
CAS No. 71342-74-0
Product Description
EPB is a telechelic liquid rubber modified by epoxidation of double bonds in liquid polybutadiene (primarily HTPB) chains. It is a pale yellow to amber transparent viscous liquid at room temperature, with triple reactivity (epoxy groups, double bonds, and terminal hydroxyl groups).
Structure: Main chain consists of polybutadiene segments, containing epoxy groups (-oxirane-), residual double bonds, and terminal hydroxyl groups; the epoxy content (number of epoxy groups) is adjustable.
Glass Transition Temperature (Tg): -55°C~-30°C (rises with increasing epoxy content)
Solubility: Soluble in aromatic hydrocarbons, esters, ketones; excellent compatibility with HTPB, epoxy resins, polyurethanes, acrylic resins
Epoxy Equivalent Weight: 150–200 g/eq (common range)
Product properties & Features
1. Triple Reactivity: Epoxy groups cure with amines/anhydrides (epoxy systems); terminal hydroxyl groups cure with isocyanates (PU systems); residual double bonds crosslink with peroxides/UV light, enabling flexible curing methods and controllable crosslink density.
2. Polarity & Adhesion: Epoxy groups enhance polarity, oil resistance, aging resistance, and adhesion, providing high bonding strength to metals, plastics, and glass.
3. Low-Temperature Flexibility + Heat Resistance: The polybutadiene main chain ensures flexibility at -50°C, while epoxy curing imparts heat resistance up to 180–250°C, with better thermal stability than conventional epoxies.
4. Low Viscosity & Easy Processability: Castable, potting, and coatable at room temperature; solvent-free and low VOC, suitable for complex components and eco-friendly formulations.
Applications
Epoxy Modification & Toughening: Toughen E-51/E-44 epoxies to improve impact resistance, fatigue resistance, and low-temperature flexibility, used in structural adhesives, composites, electronic potting.
Polyurethane Materials: Reacts with isocyanates to form PU elastomers, sealants, adhesives, combining high elasticity, oil resistance, and adhesion.
Electronics & Electrical: Potting for high-voltage components, PCB protection, insulating coatings, offering moisture resistance, temperature resistance, insulation, and vibration resistance.
Specialty Coatings: Anti-corrosion, waterproof, damping, UV-curable coatings, with strong adhesion, weather resistance, and chemical resistance.
Adhesives & Sealants: Automotive, construction, and pipeline sealants, featuring high bond strength, oil resistance, and weather resistance.
Packing & Storage
50kg/plastic drum or 180kg/metal drum packaging.
Storage should be cool, dry and ventilated. The shelf life is 12 months, after the expiration of the re-inspection can still be used.
Avoid rain and sun during transportation. Do not mix with strong oxidants.
